In a standard pool, the water is sterilized by chlorine (in the salt pools it’s always the chlorine that works) or by UV. In such a way the harmful bacterias, that are mainly introduced by swimmers, are killed and the water is safe, but it’s dead.
The bacterias in the natural pool are kept under control by the biofilm and the plankton that populate the water and the biofilter.
So the water is naturally kept in balance and it is safe for swimming and, in some cases, can be drunk. The biofilm is mainly hosted in the biofilter made with pebbles, lava stones, and zeolite, where the water is continuously running pumped by a small motor.
